To guard against possible scams, always be cautious about sharing personal information, such as Social Security numbers, account numbers, PIN numbers, passwords and User IDs. Here are some tips that can help protect you:
-
Never share information with anyone over the phone, email or text, even if they claim to be someone you know and do business with.
-
Be wary of letters or emails that ask for money or send you to suspicious websites. Don't click links within emails you don't recognize.
-
Delete texts immediately from numbers and names you don't recognize.
Always remember that Credit Union of the Rockies will never contact you and ask for personal or sensitive account information.
Merchant Card Breaches
What to expect if you are part of a breach:
If Credit Union of the Rockies identifies your card as part of a breach, a letter will be sent out to notify you. As of October 1st, 2014, we will set your compromised card to expire within 15 days of a breach notice and a new card will be ordered for you at the same time. Please understand that due to the sheer volume of a nationwide breach, the time it takes to produce new cards is slightly longer than normal.
Should I cancel my debit or credit card?
Not unless you suspect fraudulent activity. Please monitor your accounts carefully. Credit Union of the Rockies Fraud Department also monitors your accounts 24/7 and will notify you of any suspicious activity.
What are my options if I know my card was compromised in a breach?
You may choose to (1) continue to use your card as you have been while monitoring your account daily and letting us know if you see any fraudulent activity, (2) choose to proactively cancel your debit or credit card before the 15 day grace period expires to reduce possible exposure to fraudulent transactions and use another payment method such as cash or check until your new card arrives. Credit Union of the Rockies can provide free temporary checks or Visa travel money cards to those members affected by the breach.
